Abstract

Abstract

This volume of essays intends to present diverse aspects of monotheistic kingship during the Middle Ages in two general-theoretical articles and a series of “case studies” on the relationship of religion and rulership. The authors discuss examples of the role of religion—based on both textual and iconic evidence—in Carolingian, Ottonian and late medieval western Europe; in Byzantium and Armenia; Georgia; Hungary; the Khazar Khanate; Poland, and Rus’. Two studies explore the issue in medieval Jewish and Islamic political thought. The editors hope that these special inquiries will engender more comparative studies on the subject.

Abstract

"The Religion of Man is a compilation of lectures by Rabindranath Tagore, edited by Tagore and drawn largely from his Hibbert Lectures given at Oxford University in May 1930. A Brahmo playwright and poet of global renown, Tagore deals with the universal themes of God, divine experience, illumination, and spirituality. This International Edition combines all existent English editions into a single volume, including the previous foreword by Philip Novak; the introduction to the British edition by Andrew Robinson; four appendices from an earlier American edition, featuring a brief conversation between Tagore and Albert Einstein, titlx̀ed "Note on the Nature of Reality" and a new foreword by religion writer and editor Jon M. Sweeney. Tagore is unequivocal in his faith. He appreciates the intellectual triumphs of science, but he writes as a poet and philosopher. Man must always be a music-maker and dreamer of dreams; man must never lose, in his material quests, his longing for the touch of the divine. Tagore traces the growth of the idea of God from primitive notions to universality. Today, as he says, all barriers are down and "the God of humanity has arrived at the gates of the ruined temple of the tribe." His book rings with joy and affirmation, overstepping all limitations of race and creed"--

Abstract

A master spiritual teacher invites us on a journey - to the summit of self-discovery. This is a book to lift the spirit of anyone aiming to live a kinder, calmer, more meaningful life, in the midst of all the challenges facing the world today.Fifteen warm, engaging essays present different aspects of meditation and the spiritual life, showing how we can rearrange our lives, little by little, to fit a higher purpose. Featuring saints and mystics from East and West, and a host of stories and anecdotes, this book reads like a conversation with a wise friend, with deep spiritual insights that you'll want to come back to again and again.Easwaran writes, "When you travel within, every day is fresh with discoveries and challenges, inspiration and profound peace. The scenes I paint for you in the following pages are just a fleeting glimpse of the continuing adventure that awaits you as you enter this world."The final essay, "Climbing the Blue Mountain," which gives the book its title, is a moving account of the spiritual quest. Easwaran compares this with a long journey that he makes from the hot, dusty plains of Central India, up through jungle and plantations, to his home in the cool hills of the Blue Mountains, where his mother waits for him - reminding us that on the spiritual path, we too will one day find our true home.

Abstract

Abstract

Following the volume Les Peres de l'Eglise et la science medicale de leur temps, published in 2005, the present work collects 9 papers presented at the international conference organised at Sorbonne University on 15 and 16 September 2016. Based on the examination of the original texts, the papers endeavour to study the links between the Christian authors and the ancient Greek medical texts from an interdisciplinary approach. Particular attention is paid to the use in Christian texts of quotations from medical literature, medical notions, and specialized lexicon. The papers also analyse and compare the medical vocabulary attested in different types of contemporaneous writings, both pagan and Christian, literary and documentary, to better understand the process of transmission and assimilation of Greek medical science by the Christian society in the first centuries AD.

Abstract

This issue focuses on the Buddhist architecture in East Asia. Over the last 2000 years, Buddhism had transformed not only the intellectual and practical lives but also the built environments of East Asia. The articles in this issue aim to capture the scope and diversity of East Asian Buddhist architecture and delineate the front lines of research in the field. In this collection, without bypassing the significant topics of famous temples, influential monasteries, and monumental landmarks, we try to restore a more balanced picture of Buddhist practice and the built environment by incorporating buildings and planning from the overlooked regions and aspects of Buddhism. Studies here feature shrines and temples in small villages as well as those in sacred mountains, forms reshaped by contemporary life as well as those of historical events, and practices in the domestic realm as well as those with pilgrimage significance. We want to go beyond the well-established scholarships on stylistic changes, technical development, and the typological studies of halls and pagodas in China, Japan, and Korea. There are in-depth discussions of examples from regions and cultures of religious hybridity, analyzing the way architecture is built for and shaped by the practices of a given community, integrated into the spiritual and material lives, and share themes and concepts to foster a comprehensive culture that sustains life and identity of a place. These are significant issues not only for the scholarship on architectural history, but also meaningful for the contemporary building of our own life and faith.
